The Neff Estate
Andrew McNally, of map publisher Rand McNally Co. fame, came to California in 1880. He purchased about 2,300 acres in 1888 to create Windemere Ranch, in what is now La Mirada, a new community of gentleman’s ranches. A few parcels did sell, but after an economic downturn, he used the remaining land for agriculture. In 1892, McNally had architect F. L. Roehrig design a Spanish influenced “ranch house,” the McNally Mansion. He also added a foreman’s house and carriage house to the ranch. The buildings and ranch were deeded to son-in-law Edwin Neff and daughter Nanny in 1901. The three buildings are registered as The Neff Estate on the National Register of Historic Places.
