Gerald Desmond Bridge
The Salt Lake Railway provided the first bridge access to Terminal Island from Long Beach with a single railroad track built on a wooden trestle at the turn of the 20th century. Construction of the current through arch Gerald Desmond Bridge was completed in 1968. Planning for its replacement started in 2008. The project marked a high point with the official topping-out ceremony commemorating the completion of the two 515-foot-high towers in December 2017. The ribbon cutting ceremony on October 2, 2020, marked completion of the bridge. It is expected to be open to traffic on October 5. The new bridge has been renamed the Long Beach International Gateway following a public survey.
