Citrus Belt Savings and Loan
The Citrus Belt Savings and Loan building was designed by architect Stiles O. Clements in a California Churrigueresque revival style in 1926. Clements was a well-known theater architect in Los Angeles. Projects included the Wiltern, the Mayan and the El Capitan. The structure’s highly ornate façade had been hidden behind a modern false front since the early 1960s, only to be rediscovered when the Riverside Community College District purchased it in 2005. The district, in collaboration with the City of Riverside, undertook a $5.5 million restoration project. The Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties, a museum, archive and educational center, opened in 2012.
