The Theme Building

Dedicated in 1961 by VP Lyndon B. Johnson, the Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), a Googie architecture icon was designed initially by James Langenheim, of Pereira & Luckman and subsequently taken to fruition by a team of architects and engineers headed by William Pereira and Charles Luckman that also included Paul Revere Williams and Welton Becket. It was renovated in 1997 with lighting by Walt Disney Imagineering to add the Encounter Restaurant and Observation Level. The restaurant closed in 2013 but the Observation Level remains open on weekends. In 2018, the Bob Hope USO at LAX relocated to the ground floor, opening a 7,100 square foot facility. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Culturual Monument.
