Queen Mary
John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland, began Cunard Line Job #534 in 1930. Delayed by the Great Depression, the Queen Mary finally launched on September 26, 1934. Her maiden voyage for the Cunard-White Star Line departed on May 27, 1936. She boasted 12 decks with 5 dining areas and lounges, 2 cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The ship carried some 2.2 million passengers in peacetime and 810,000 military personnel in World War II. Her final departure from Southhampton ended in Long Beach on December 9, 1967, where she became an iconic Southern California attraction, hotel and venue for special events. The Queen is on the National Register of Historic Places.
