Landmark #500 Part 1 of 3 – the master plan developed by William Pereira for the UC Irvine campus included twelve buildings. Today we are featuring Crawford Hall, Schneiderman Lecture Hall, Steinhaus Hall and UCI Student Health Center.

The architectural firm of William Pereira has a large footprint in Orange County. We are marking a special milestone for the SoCal Landmarks project, Landmark #500, with a feature of Pereira’s architecture on the UC Irvine campus.

This structure was, for 35 years, the headquarters of the San Diego Eagles Aerie, a fraternal group making philanthropic contributions to the community. The Eagles Hall retains much of its appearance when the hall was expanded in 1934.

This 25-room, Streamline Moderne house in the Floral Park area of Santa Ana, built in 1938, is called the Maharajah’s House because it was, in fact, the 18th home owned by the Maharajah of Indore, Sir Yeshwant Holkar.

The California Hotel in Fullerton was redeveloped into a series of small shops, restaurants and offices now known as Villa del Sol in 1965 following protests that were mounted against demolishing it and building a car wash in its place.

The Hawthorne Inn was built in 1900 for Dr. Edward Butler and his wife, Jennie. It is one of the few remaining large wood frame inns of its period, a working man’s hotel, without frills. San Diego has no remaining comparable structure.

The El Cortez Apartment Hotel, or simply the El Cortez, opened for business on November 23, 1927. Over 50,000 San Diegans, almost a 1/3 of the city population, toured the new tallest building in San Diego on its opening day.
